Kejriwal to stay in the same cell where Anna was kept in 2011
New Delhi: Former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was Wednesday taken to the same Tihar jail cell where his mentor Anna Hazare was kept after his arrest during the Lokpal movement in 2011.
Kejriwal will stay alone in jail number four here, where he will sleep on the floor and will be served routine jail food. He has also been allowed to take his medicines, Tihar spokesperson Sunil Gupta told PTI.
The Aam Aadmi Party leader reached Tihar jail at 6:30 pm after he was arrested and remanded in judicial custody by a local court today till May 23 after he refused to furnish a bail bond of Rs 10,000 in a defamation case filed by BJP leader Nitin Gadkari.
After his arrival, Kejriwal underwent a medical check up as per rules.
“He was then kept in the meditation ward of jail number four where he will sleep on the floor. He will get routine jail food which is given to all the prisoners. As he is diabetic, he has been allowed his medicines after court order,” Gupta said.
There is no television in the ward and Kejriwal would get newspapers to read in his cell, he said.
The former Delhi Chief Minister will have to spend at least one day and two nights in the same cell where his once mentor Anna Hazare was kept for a day during the 2011 Lokpal movement, he said.
Jail number four at Tihar is meant for people whose cases are being heard at Patiala House and Saket Courts.
After the local court pronounced its order, Kejriwal was taken into lock up inside the court premises amid tight security and later taken to Tihar Jail at around 5:15 pm.
